Andes Institute for Technology Transfer
A proven technology that turns coal mining waste into high-value industrial materials — now coming to Antioquia, Colombia.
From mining waste, wealth is born — and the land breathes again.
"Del residuo minero nace riqueza — y la tierra vuelve a respirar."
The Challenge
Coal gangue and other mining byproducts accumulate at mine sites across Antioquia — a long-term environmental liability that doesn't go away when production slows. Environmental regulation continues to tighten. International buyers increasingly expect ESG performance throughout their supply chains. And the broader "just transition" conversation puts real pressure on the social license of coal-producing companies and the communities that depend on them.
Coal waste upcycling offers a different path: a proven technology that converts that same waste into high-value construction and industrial materials — turning a mine's largest liability into a new revenue stream, and a compliance burden into a circular-economy asset.
This is sustainable industry and circular economy in practice — not a policy aspiration, but a way to put the waste already on the ground to work.
How It Works
A process already validated at commercial scale, brought to Colombia under a signed licensing agreement.
Engineering and process calibration for Antioquia's specific coal gangue composition and mine-site conditions.
A facility in Amagá, Antioquia, converting mine waste into high-value construction and industrial materials.
Proven economics and operations replicated across Colombia's coal-producing regions, and beyond.
Partnership Network
Partnering with ACI Medellín, leveraging the agency's platform to advance high-quality industrial technologies aligned with Colombia's development priorities.
Antioquia's Mining Secretariat
In discussion with the Secretaría de Minas de Antioquia as a potential partner for the coal waste upcycling pilot project.
In discussion with Ruta N about integrating into Medellín's broader science and technology ecosystem.
Leadership
Founder
Founder of Andes ITT, bringing a career spanning academia, industry, and entrepreneurship to the discipline of turning industrial waste into lasting value — grounded in a deep commitment to the people and the land that sustain us.
Proven Technology
A coal-based solid waste site in China, where this process was developed and refined over nearly a decade of applied engineering.
Development began in 2018, when a Chinese industrial city invited an engineering team to address its legacy of coal-based waste. More than 30 experts in material science, automation, and business have worked on the problem since.
Commercial deployments include China Railway 20th Bureau Group, Shanxi Road and Bridge Construction Group, and Shanxi Excellent Cement, among others.
First Industrial Initiative
A proposed pilot near Medellín exploring the conversion of coal-based industrial waste — primarily coal gangue — into high-value industrial products, developed in partnership with Chinese industrial solid-waste processing expertise.
Proposed site: Amagá District, southwestern Antioquia — 92,000 m² total, 51,000 m² built area.
